SAN FRANCISCO, Agusan del Sur — The Philippine National Police (PNP) Surigao del Sur Provincial Police Office has intensified its advocacy on youth protection by raising awareness about the dangers of harmful ideologies such as nihilismandmisanthropy, emphasizing the need for stronger collaboration among families, schools, and communities in safeguarding young people.

The campaign gains significance following the shooting incident at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University Junior High School campus on August 18, where a Grade 8 student opened fire inside the school premises, killing one student and injuring several others before taking his own life.

Police investigators are now examining digital evidence, including the recovered cellphone and other personal belongings of the suspect, to determine his online activities, possible warning signs, and the motive behind the incident.

The PNP said the investigation will continue carefully, with authorities looking into whether there were previous threats, incidents, or indicators that could have alerted concerned individuals before the tragedy.

In its information campaign, the Surigao del Sur Provincial Police Office warned about the possible effects of negative mindsets such as nihilism, which involves the belief that life lacks meaning or purpose and may lead to hopelessness and indifference, and misanthropy, which refers to deep distrust or hatred toward humanity that may result in isolation and hostility.

The police emphasized that incidents involving young people highlight the importance of creating safe and supportive environments in schools. Students, including those from the Ateneo de Zamboanga University Secondary School Department, have underscored the need for open communication, guidance programs, and stronger support systems that allow learners to express concerns and seek help.

The PNP stressed that protecting the youth is a shared responsibility involving parents, educators, communities, and law enforcement. It urged the public to strengthen community connections, promote mental health awareness, encourage meaningful engagement, and remain vigilant in recognizing signs that a young person may be struggling.

“Safeguarding our youth is a shared responsibility that requires the collective efforts of the entire community,” the PNP said, reaffirming its commitment to work hand-in-hand with parents and educators to protect the welfare of young Filipinos.

Through continued awareness efforts, the police hope to build stronger minds, safer communities, and a more hopeful Philippines.
