Philippine Trail Running National Team Achieves Remarkable Success at Asia Pacific Trail Running Championships

Ulju, South Korea – The Philippine team emerged with outstanding results at the inaugural Asia Pacific Trail Running Championships, held from October 23-27, 2024, showcasing the 200 best-ranked athletes from 20 countries. The event concludes with the Philippines as the number two team in the Asia Pacific region, earning a silver medal, with Japan securing the top spot and Hong Kong placing third.

Leading the charge was John Ray Onifa, who secured a coveted gold medal in the men’s short trail event, defeating strong contenders from Japan, China, and Australia. This victory contributed to the team’s silver medal in the Men’s Short Trail, supported by impressive performances from young athletes Randolf Gonzales, 25, and Romnick Tongkaling, 18, who ranked 6th and 12th, respectively.

The Men’s Long Trail also earned a silver medal, thanks to the steady performances of Larry Apolinario, 26, who placed 6th, team captain Arnie Macaneras in 9th place, and Rhys Pawid, who finished 23rd. “I could not ingest any food at kilometer 22, but I knew my faster teammates would have a good time, and I wanted to contribute to a medal, so I just hung on for my team,” Rhys said after crossing the finish line, visibly drained.

The female team narrowly missed the podium, with strong performances from Long Trail’s Elizabeth Dangadang, who placed 6th, and Angelica Cabalo, who finished 16th. In the women’s short trail, Christabel Martes ranked 12th, while Trisha Reyes placed 14th. Noemi Fernandez, Angelica Alejo, Godwin Mirar, and Roberto Cain also delivered commendable performances. The athletes’ results showcased the depth of talent within the team, developed through dedication and training, which has helped offset their lack of racing experience and exposure. This is only the beginning for a young association like PHILTRA.

The PHILTRA team extends its gratitude to Philippine Airlines (PAL) for its essential support in this historic journey. PAL has empowered Filipino athletes over the years, enabling them to participate in both local and international competitions, thereby showcasing the true talent, skill, and spirit of the Philippines. “Philippine Airlines’ support and dedication to sports development help turn the dreams of Filipino athletes into reality, enabling them to represent the country on the global stage and chase victories that unite and inspire the nation,” said Alvin Miranda, PAL Vice President for Marketing.

“Access to travel for competitions and training camps around the Philippines and abroad is crucial to our nationwide development program. Taking flight has become synonymous with our grassroots efforts, and we are thrilled to have PAL’s support for this competition. They have always been our carrier of choice,” said Tin Ferrera, PHILTRA’s Secretary General and Vice President. PHILTRA’s grassroots program, which ensures easier access to qualifying races for potential athletes around the country, has allowed young talents like Romnick Tongkaling, 18, and Angelica Alejo, 25, to be discovered. The team’s success is also attributed to support from ATPI, which provides seamless travel solutions, and Salomon Philippines, the official trail running shoe partner, ensuring athletes have the best gear for competition. Additionally, Race Ya! offers a valuable digital platform for sports.

Looking ahead, PHILTRA remain committed to nurturing and developing talent across the nation. “The dedication and resilience of our athletes have been evident throughout this journey. As we look towards future competitions, we are excited about the prospect of Olympic inclusion in trail running for Brisbane 2032,” said Atty. James Roldan, PHILTRA President.
