Malacañang has defended the International Criminal Court (ICC) proceedings against former President Rodrigo Duterte, assuring the public that the trial is being conducted fairly and transparently.
Palace Press Officer and Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Cherie Castro dismissed concerns raised by Duterte’s supporters regarding alleged bias in the ICC’s handling of the case.
“This is what we call a fair trial,” Castro stated, emphasizing that the former president’s rights are being protected throughout the legal process.
She further assured that Duterte will have the opportunity to present his defense, adding, “We trust that the ICC will uphold the principles of justice and fairness.”
Duterte is currently facing crimes against humanity charges linked to his administration’s “war on drugs,” which allegedly led to thousands of deaths. His supporters have criticized the ICC’s investigation, calling it politically motivated, while human rights groups continue to push for accountability.
