Malacañang on Thursday defended the government’s decision to turn over former President Rodrigo Duterte to the International Criminal Court (ICC), saying it was in accordance with the law.
Presidential Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro responded to Senator Imee Marcos’ questioning of the government’s decision to surrender Duterte to the ICC. Castro emphasized that the arrest was a lawful act.
“The explanation was incomplete, especially in the video. The senator asked, ‘Why did we surrender him to a foreign entity?’ This is actually provided for in the law,” Castro stressed.
During a press briefing, Castro explained that the arrest was part of the Philippines’ compliance with international agreements, including the ICC.
