PROJECT / ACTIVITY REPORT
Project / Activity Title:KASOY (CASHEW) SEEDLINGS DONATION
Overview: Give a brief, one-sentence description of your project.
RCCDO’s environment and livelihood project that provided 90 cashew seedlings to Barangay Pigsag-an, in the remote highlands of Cagayan De Oro City.

Detailed description: Provide details about your project, the purpose of the project, the project (or event) plan, and who the project will benefit (including how many people that will be).
Through the generous initiative of Rotarian Aerol Torralba, RCCDO transported and donated Php13,500 worth of or 90 Cashew seedlings (7 crates) to Barangay Pigsag-an in the remote highlands of Cagayan De Oro City.   Each cashew seedling is worth Php150 and can produce 5-11 Kilograms of nuts (2-5 kilograms finished product) per year, with a retail price of Php 300-700 per kilogram. The seedlings are difficult to cultivate and grow according to locals, and are not easily reproduced in most areas.   Due to the critical nature of security in the barangay, RCCDO partnered with various Local Government Units, the Department of Education, and the Philippine National Police for travel and events management. RCCDO also combined the Kasoy Seedlings Donation project with the Books Across The Seas turnover ceremony and the Balik Eskwela: Pigsag-an Project into a two-hour event to maximize the trip and security initiatives.   The turnover ceremony was hosted by Barangay Pigsag-an and was witnessed by about 300 students, teachers, and guests. The area is situated in the remote mountains 35 kilometers from city.   As recently as 2019, the Philippine Army’s 65th Infantry Battalion overrun an NPA rebel camp in the barangay, allowing government services to expand further in the locality. The project thus serves as an initiative to grow the local economy and also as an effort to promote peace in Barangay Pigsag-an. It reinforces the government’s effort in keeping lawless elements from taking advantage of the general community’s poverty and illiteracy.   As an initiative to protect the environment, the project promotes planting of select trees to address the severe deforestation in the area. Barangay Pigsag-an is situated in a locality highly affected by the mining industry for decades along the Iponan River interconnected watershed. This encompasses the gold mining/panning sites in the upperstream areas of Gango, Libona in Bukidnon, Tumpagon and Pigsag-an in Cagayan de Oro City, Nangcaon, Opol Misamis Oriental and Rogongon, Iligan City. During the trip, the Rotarians and Spouses were deeply affected with the sight of the heavily silted Iponan river, and the denuded mountains.   RCCDO was provided with a Minibus by Barangay Lumbia and a Rotarian owned pickup truck for the seedlings as a safer transport option. Pigsag-an Barangay Captain Sonny Rondahan contributed the use of the Baranggay Hall covered court for venue, manpower, sound equipment, and refreshment.   The Philippine National Police provided a team with an officer as security detail during the travel and the event.   The project is chaired by Rotarian Aerol Torralba, in coordination with Balik Eskwela Project Chairmen PP Danny Empedrad and Lino Epanes.
