Books Across The Seas (BATS) is RCCDO’s partnership project with RC Makati in providing quality text books to public schools in far flung areas with limited access to technology for a symbolic cost of Php3 per book. RCCDO identified Tumpagon Elementary School and Tagpangi Elementary schools as recipients of the BATS project to start the second year of implementation. Due to the critical nature of security in the locality, RCCDO partnered with various Local Government Units, the Department of Education, and the Philippine National Police for travel and events management. RCCDO also combined the BATS turnover ceremony with the Balik Eskwela: Pigsag-an Project, and the Kasuy Seedling Donation Livelihood and Environment Project into a two-hour event to maximize the trip and security initiatives. The turnover ceremony was hosted by Barangay Pigsag-an, ideally located in between Barangays Tumpagon and Tagpangi. The event location is situated in the remote mountains of Cagayan De Oro City, 35 kilometers from the city center. As recently as 2019, the Philippine Army’s 65th Infantry Battalion overrun an NPA rebel camp in the area, allowing government services to expand further in the locality. The project thus also served as a peace initiative in the community through the promise of supportive presence, and the club’s direct participation in their resident learner’s academic needs. This reinforces the government’s effort in keeping lawless elements from taking advantage of the general community’s poverty and illiteracy. 600 text books were transported to the event, with Tumpagon and Tagpangi Elementary School each receiving 300 pieces each through their respective representatives. Through the efforts of our member Rotarian Aerol Torralba, himself a Baranggay official in a neighboring LGU, RCCDO was provided with a Minibus and transport truck by Barangay Lumbia as a safer transport option. The DEPED was represented by Tagpangi Elementary School Head Teacher Isagani D. Olarte, Jr. and Tumpagon Elementary School Head Annalou B. Recaña. Pigsag-an Barangay Captain Sonny Rondahan provided the Baranggay Hall covered court for venue, manpower, sound equipment, and refreshment. The Philippine National Police provided a team with an officer as security detail during the travel and the event. The project is chaired by PE Leonides Quicoy, since its first implementation in RY2023-24. |
