Harry Roque Seeks Asylum in the Netherlands Amid Legal Woes

The Hague, Netherlands – Former Philippine presidential spokesperson Harry Roque has officially applied for asylum in the Netherlands, citing claims of “unjust persecution” in his home country. Roque, a longtime defender of former President Rodrigo Duterte, is facing multiple criminal charges in the Philippines, including human trafficking and obstruction of justice. He alleges that the legal actions against him are politically motivated.

Roque’s asylum bid follows the issuance of an arrest warrant against him by a congressional committee in the Philippines. The warrant, issued for contempt, is reportedly linked to an ongoing investigation into Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) and alleged attempts to connect Duterte to related controversies.

According to Roque, the charges against him are part of a broader effort to silence those who have defended Duterte, who is currently facing an International Criminal Court (ICC) case over allegations of crimes against humanity linked to his administration’s war on drugs. Roque contends that his legal troubles stem from his efforts to counter what he describes as a politically driven investigation.

The Netherlands’ immigration authorities will review Roque’s asylum request under the principle of non-refoulement, which prohibits the deportation of individuals to countries where they may face persecution or serious harm. If granted asylum, Roque will receive protection in the Netherlands. However, if his application is denied, he may face extradition or deportation back to the Philippines, where he will have to answer the charges against him.

As of now, Philippine government officials have yet to issue a statement regarding Roque’s asylum application. The case is expected to draw further international attention, given Roque’s previous role as a staunch defender of Duterte’s policies on the global stage.
