The Philippine Senate has launched an investigation into the arrest and handover of former President Rodrigo Duterte to the International Criminal Court (ICC).
The probe aims to determine whether due process was followed and if Duterte’s legal rights were upheld.
Duterte was arrested on March 11, 2025, at Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport after returning from a trip to Hong Kong.
The Senate inquiry was initiated by Senator Imee Marcos, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and sister of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
The investigation will examine the circumstances surrounding Duterte’s arrest and the Philippine government’s decision to cooperate with the ICC.
