The impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte is facing uncertainty, as House prosecutors consider seeking clarification from the Supreme Court regarding the trial’s timeline. This move comes amid concerns over when the Senate will convene as an impeachment court.
Although the House of Representatives has already transmitted the articles of impeachment, Senate President Francis Escudero has indicated that the trial will not commence until June, when the Senate resumes session. However, some lawmakers argue that the Senate can convene at any time, as the impeachment process is sui generis—a unique legal proceeding separate from the standard legislative process.
With differing interpretations on the timing of the trial, the Supreme Court may be asked to intervene, providing guidance that could resolve the impasse and shape the next steps in the impeachment process.
