SULTAN KUDARAT – A hard-hitting radio commentator was shot dead by motorcycle-riding gunmen in Sultan Kudarat province Wednesday morning.
Police said Jaynard Angeles, 36, radio commentator and former station manager of Radyo ni Juan FM station, died from a gunshot wound in the head.
Initial police investigation showed that Angeles was waiting for his car in front of a car repair shop in Barangay New Carmen in Tacurong City at around 10:00am when two men on board a motorcycle stopped near him. One of the men then shot Angeles at close range. He instantly died from a bullet wound in the head.
Angeles, a resident of Barangay Matiompong in Lambayong town, Sultan Kudarat, was running for an elective post in next year’s national and local elections under the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas party.
Allan Freno, information officer of the Tacurong city government, said Angeles resigned from Radyo ni Juan to run for councilor in Lambayong.
Before his death, Angeles still worked at Radyo ni Juan-Tacurong but as a radio commentator or blocktimer.
Police authorities are still trying to determine the motive of the shooting, whether it was related to his work as a radio broadcaster or as a political aspirant.
Starting Sunday, the government has been implementing a nationwide gun ban in preparation for next year’s national and local elections.
