KALIBO, Aklan – Former Kalibo Mayor and respected media figure Juan P. Dayang, 89, died Tuesday night after being shot in what authorities believe to be a targeted assassination. The incident took place at his residence in Villa Salvacion, Kalibo, shortly after 8 p.m.
Dayang, a long-time advocate for media freedom and press responsibility, was found unconscious by his caregiver after reportedly being attacked by a lone gunman who fled the scene on a motorcycle. Witnesses say the assailant had been seen loitering in the neighborhood earlier that day, leading police to suspect the killing was premeditated.
Initial reports indicate Dayang sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the nearby Dr. Rafael S. Tumbocon Memorial Hospital but was declared dead shortly after arrival.
Dayang had a distinguished career in both journalism and public service. As former president and later chairman emeritus of the Publishers Association of the Philippines Inc. (PAPI), he was a leading voice for provincial and community journalism. He also served as a one-term mayor of Kalibo in the late 1980s, gaining a reputation as a reform-oriented leader who prioritized transparency and civic participation.
In recent years, Dayang remained active in media-related advocacy and held an honorary role with the Catholic Mass Media Awards. He was known for mentoring young journalists and promoting ethical reporting standards across regional publications.
His death has sent shockwaves through both the media and political communities.
“This was not just an attack on an individual, but a blow to the principles he stood for,” said Nelson S. Santos, current president of PAPI, in a statement. “Juan was a pillar of truth in our profession. We call on authorities to thoroughly investigate this crime and ensure justice is served.”
Police have confirmed that they are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby establishments and gathering testimonies from neighbors and witnesses. No suspects have been identified as of press time, and the motive remains under investigation.
As the community mourns, colleagues and public officials have expressed grief and outrage over Dayang’s death, with many calling for stronger protections for media practitioners and community leaders.
A public memorial is being planned in Kalibo to honor Dayang’s life and contributions to the nation.
