Indonesia is mourning the passing of former Vice President Try Sutrisno, who died at the age of 90, according to confirmation from the Vice Presidential Secretariat.
The retired Indonesian Army general passed away at Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital in Jakarta at 6:58 a.m. local time on Monday. Following the announcement, his body was taken to his private residence on Jalan Purwakarta in Menteng, Central Jakarta, where family members, close associates, government officials, and friends are expected to pay their final respects before his burial.
Try Sutrisno served as Indonesia’s sixth vice president from 1993 to 1998 during the administration of President Suharto. His tenure came during a significant period in the country’s political history, as Indonesia approached the end of Suharto’s three-decade rule.

Before transitioning into the vice presidency, Try Sutrisno built a long and distinguished military career. He held several key leadership roles within the Indonesian Armed Forces, including serving as Army Chief of Staff from 1986 to 1988. His leadership placed him at the center of national defense and security affairs during a crucial era for Indonesia.
Throughout decades of public service, he was regarded as a disciplined and steadfast leader who dedicated much of his life to the nation, both in uniform and in civilian office. His contributions to Indonesia’s military and political institutions remain part of the country’s modern history.
He is survived by his wife, Tuti Setiawati, and their seven children—four sons and three daughters—along with grandchildren and extended family members. As Indonesia reflects on his life and legacy, many remember him as a soldier, statesman, husband, and father whose service spanned generations.
