MANILA, Philippines – Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero has rejected a request from the House prosecution team to summon Vice President Sara Duterte ahead of her impeachment trial, citing the ongoing congressional recess.
Escudero clarified that the Senate cannot act on the request while Congress is on break, emphasizing that the impeachment process follows strict procedural rules. He noted that the House prosecutors are fully aware of these guidelines.
The House prosecution team sought to have VP Duterte testify before the Senate prior to the trial, but Escudero’s decision delays any such appearance until Congress resumes session. The impeachment trial is set to move forward once lawmakers return.
