End of an Era: Philtranco to Cease Operations After 112 Years

End of an era on the road. Philtranco Service Enterprises Inc., the country’s oldest bus operator, will officially cease operations on March 30 after 112 years of service. The decision follows years of mounting financial losses that management says have made continued operations unsustainable despite attempts to recover and restructure the business.

Founded in 1914 as the Albert Louis Ammen Transportation Co. or ALATCO, Philtranco grew into one of the most recognized names in provincial transportation. For decades, its buses connected Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, helping families stay connected, supporting tourism and trade, and providing an affordable way for Filipinos to travel across the archipelago. Many people have memories tied to long bus rides, homecomings, vacations, school trips, or simple everyday journeys made possible by this company.

The shutdown will directly affect hundreds of employees including drivers, conductors, maintenance crews, and administrative staff. Company leadership acknowledged the dedication of its workforce, describing drivers as the heartbeat of the service and office personnel as its backbone, especially during the company’s most challenging years. Their commitment kept operations running even as the industry faced rising costs, competition, and changing travel patterns.

Philtranco had already shown signs of difficulty in recent years, including temporary service suspensions while trying to address financial concerns. While there were hopes for recovery, those efforts ultimately were not enough to sustain long term operations.

While its buses may soon stop running, the legacy of Philtranco in Philippine transportation history remains significant. It helped shape provincial travel, supported economic activity, and became part of everyday life for generations of Filipinos. Many passengers will remember not just the destinations, but the journeys themselves.

Thank you, Philtranco, for more than a century of service, memories, and miles traveled across the Philippines. Safe travels to all the workers and passengers who were part of this remarkable journey.
