The Department of Science and Technology Region XI (DOST XI) launched its ram pump water system in Barangay Lumiad, Paquibato District as part of the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) Davao City program last June 22, 2023.
According to Mr. John Villarma, Project Technical Assistant I and Davao City CEST Staff, it carries water from a spring source 3 kilometers away. Its lift is estimated to be around 120 to 210 meters from the source.
Initially, they expected the ram pump to collect 7,500 liters per day. Upon testing, it was found that the pump is capable of an output of 43,200 liters per day.
A faucet was also installed as an outlet for the water inside the Lumiad Elementary School, Lumiad National High School, and in front of the Barangay Hall.
Mr. Arnel M. Rodriguez, DOST Davao City Science & Technology Director, previously said the water pump is designed to feature a slanting pipe to make use of gravity and would not require a pump using electricity or fossil fuel.
This project is expected to bring potable water for the estimated 1,500 residents in the remote village of Barangay Lumiad. Mr. Jay Remorosa, School Principal of Lumiad Elementary School, was grateful. “Even when the winds and rains were strong these past few days, the water system that DOST XI installed didn’t collapse. It is a good project because we could continuously benefit from it.” The final phase of this project is a water quality test to ascertain the water’s potability. (PR/DOST XI)
