Paglaum sports program kicks off in Villanueva town

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The “Paglaum Sports program” in Misamis Oriental founded by Governor Peter M. Unabia is now ongoing in Villanueva town, a top official confirmed to Mindanao Daily yesterday.

Tommy Cailing, provincial sports overseer said 11 barangays participated in the ongoing basketball and volleyball tournaments in Villanueva town. 

The successful holding of the basketball and volleyball tournaments in Villanueva was made possible with the active leadership of Hon Virgelia ‘Bebing” Dumadag, who is also the Special Assistant to the Governor.

Cailing also attributed the help of the Paglaum youth leaders who organized the sports activities in Villanueva town.

“At least eleven barangays joined the tournaments  every Saturday and Sunday at the Poblacion Tres covered courts,” he said.

Cailing said the tournaments will run from four to five months and the prizes await the winners during awarding ceremonies, Prizes at stake are P20,000.00 (first prize; P15,000.00 (2nd Prize) and P10,000.00 (third prize).


The provincial sports overseer continued that the Paglaum sports development program founded by Governor Unabia is aimed at giving the youth sector worthwhile activities, as well as minimizing or even eradicating the involvement of the youth in drug addiction, teenage pregnancy, habitual delinquency and other unhealthy doings. 

“Akong ikapasigarbo nga ang Paglaum sport development program was founded by Governor Peter M. Unabia,” Cailing said.

Under the province’s sports development program, Cailing said, it is also supporting some other sports disciplines. “Aduna kitay karate nga naa dha sa Tagoloan. In fact, we have just supported our karate team in their latest tournament held in Batangas. Luckily, our karate team won two golds, and we are very proud of that.”

Aside from karate, the program is also currently supporting Arnis in Salay and Balingoan towns under the leadership of Mr Pax Chaves.   

Boxing is also ongoing in many municipalities, including Balingoan, Balingasag, Claveria, Odiongan Gingoog City


Cailing said they are currently qualifying who among the youths and out-of-school-youths will compete in Batang Pinoy Sports Tournament, as well as at the upcoming Regional Meet and Palarong  Pambansa that will take place in July.

“We are now currently looking for the best athletes of the province that we are going to support in Batang Pinoy, Regional Meet and Palarong Pambansa,” Cailing concluded.  -30-
