DOST XI Holds Lecture on Handwashing, Food Safety and Halal Training

The Department of Science and Technology Regional Office XI (DOST XI) held a two-day training on Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Halal food for women micro-enterprises in Region XI on December 27-28, 2022.

DOST XI Science Research Specialists Robelyn Pulido and Marielle Malinao conducted lectures on personal hygiene, cleaning and sanitation, raw materials, food safety hazards, and pest control.

Ms. Pulido also headed the “glow-germ” experiment where she demonstrated how quickly germs can spread and why people need to properly wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

Christine Esther Flor Catoera, Vanessa Olivar, and Alma Lamparas, resource speakers from the DOST XI Halal S&T Program, talked about Halal Concepts and Principles, Halal Assurance System and Halal Management System.

Halal food is permissible for Muslims to eat according to Islamic teachings while Haram food is not admissible (pork, blood, intoxicants and alcoholic beverages, and animals slaughtered incorrectly). Mushbooh means food not confirmed whether it is Halal or Haram.

“Daghan ug learnings. Inspiring kay naga-grow sad mi. Daghan pa diay puwede ma-improve. Looking forward mi sa future na mas ma-enhance pa namo amoang product. Thank you kaayo DOST for the opportunity na kami ang napili ninyo na mu-attend ani na seminar (We learned a lot. It’s inspiring because we also grow and realize there are still a lot to improve. We look forward to enhancing our products. Thank you DOST for this opportunity and for choosing us to attend this seminar),” said Linly Rose Sanchez, a participant from the Samahan ng mga Masisipag na Kababaihan ng Baliok (SAMAKABA).

SAMAKABA SLP Association specializes in cakes and pastry production.

“Nagapasalamat mi na nadungagan among learning sa GMP and Halal seminar. At least naa miy ma-share sa among kauban sa production (We are thankful for our added learning in the GMP and Halal Seminar. At least we can share something in our associates in the production),” Mary Loue Lechadores, production staff of NutraRich Nutraceutical Innovations, said. NutraRich is a food manufacturing company based in the Philippines that specializes in Philippine Davao Cacao, specifically the Tablea.

“Maraming salamat sa DOST na gitagaan ta niyag panahon para tudloan ta ani. Dako nig tabang sa atoa. Misking muingon ta na brayt kayo ta mas mabuti na sila kay gistudyhan na nila ilang mga ginatudlo sa toa,” (Many thanks to DOST for spending their time to teach us this. This is a big help to us. Even if we say we’re geniuses already, DOST’s better because the stuff they’re teaching us is well-researched.) Anisa Abellanida, owner of Anisa Suka, said.
