DOST XI Conducts Breadfruit Parenting Activity for Residents of Barangay Bantol 

The Department of Science and Technology XI (DOST XI) City Science and Technology Office (CSTO) conducted a tree parenting activity of breadfruit in Barangay Bantol, Davao City for 30 residents aimed at strengthening the resilience of local communities. 

Breadfruit, recognized for its resilience as a crop and its nutritional value, is considered a crucial food source during emergencies such as disasters and calamities. As a proactive measure, the DOST XI-CSTO took the initiative to distribute 30 breadfruit seedlings and provide propagation training to community members.

The activity was administered by Mr. Dino M. Gubalane and Mr. Emmanuel C. Roldan of Askwell Breadfruit, who emphasized the dual benefits of breadfruit as both a resilient food source and a potential income generator for communities.

Mr. Gubalane highlighted the significance of breadfruit in disaster risk preparation, stating, “Breadfruit is not only a hardy crop that can withstand adverse conditions but also provides a valuable source of nutrition during emergencies.”

Moreover, Mr. Roldan emphasized the economic potential of breadfruit citing that it can serve as an income-generating crop for communities due to Its versatility in culinary applications.

The tree parenting activity is aligned with the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology program by DOST which aims to harness science and technology for the betterment of communities. By equipping residents with the knowledge and resources needed to cultivate and propagate breadfruit trees, the initiative aims to create resilient and self-sufficient communities.

DOST XI CSTO Science Research Specialist II said that the activity is part of the Agency’s commitment to creating a network of resilient communities capable of facing various challenges, including food scarcity during emergencies.
