Comelec Clarifies Chairperson George Garcia Not Subject to Marcos’ Courtesy Resignation Call

Manila, Philippines – May 22, 2025 — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has clarified that its chairperson, George Garcia, is not part of the Cabinet and is therefore not required to submit a courtesy resignation following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to Cabinet secretaries.

In an official statement released to the media, Comelec emphasized the independent status of the commission, stating, “The Chairman is not a Cabinet Member, and COMELEC is not a part of the Executive Department. The Commission on Elections is an Independent Constitutional Commission directly accountable to and answers directly to the People of the Republic of the Philippines.”

This clarification comes amid the ongoing wave of courtesy resignations submitted by Cabinet officials as part of the administration’s post-midterm recalibration efforts.
