Former House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. passed away on February 10, 2026, at the age of 89. His death was confirmed by Pangasinan 4th District Representative Gina de Venecia through a social media announcement. De Venecia was widely known in Philippine politics for his multiple terms as Speaker of the House of Representatives and his long career in public service.
Often referred to as “JDV” or “Manong Joe,” he served as Speaker from 1992 to 1998 and again from 2001 to 2008. During those years, he played a key role in legislative leadership and national political discussions. He also served as head of the Lakas-CMD party when it was a dominant political organization in the country. In 1998, he ran for president but finished second to then Vice President Joseph Estrada.
Before entering national politics, De Venecia worked in journalism and later pursued international business ventures. He became involved in overseas contract projects, including port operations, housing, agriculture, and oil exploration in different regions such as the Middle East, Africa, and North America. He was also associated with initiatives that supported overseas Filipino employment and remittance programs.

De Venecia completed his early education in Dagupan, attended De La Salle for high school, and later studied journalism at Ateneo de Manila University, where he participated in student publications.
Over the years, he received various recognitions, including an honorary doctorate in International Relations from the University of Cambodia in 2008. His career spanned journalism, business, and politics, making him a notable figure in several sectors.
