4.8% Families in NorMin are Food Poor in 2023

Subsistence incidence among Filipino families in Northern Mindanao was estimated at 4.8 percent in 2023.

This indicates that 48 out of one thousand Filipino families did not have sufficient income to sustain their minimum basic food needs in the year 2023. In the full year of 2021, the proportion of families in Northern Mindanao who were food poor was recorded at 6.2 percent while it was recorded at 3.9 percent in 2018.

The subsistence incidence among families in the region was observed to be higher than the subsistence incidence among families at the national level which was estimated at 2.7 percent in 2023.

Among the provinces in the region, Lanao del Norte posted the highest estimate for subsistence incidence among families at 11.1 percent while the City of Cagayan de Oro posted the least estimate at 0.6 percent.

Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Oriental and City of Cagayan de Oro exhibited decreases in subsistence incidence among families while Misamis Occidental and the City of Lligan posted increases.

In terms of magnitude, Bukidnon posted the highest number of food poor families in 2023 at 21.42 thousand food poor families while the City of Cagayan de Oro recorded the lowest number at 1.23 thousand food poor families.

The data also showed that in 2023, a family of five in Northern Mindanao needed at least PhP 9,676 to meet their family’s basic food needs in a month. This is an increase of 15.4 percent from the 2021 threshold estimated at PhP 8,385. Northern Mindanao’s food threshold was higher than the estimated national food threshold of PhP 9,581.

Among the provinces and HUCs, the City of Cagayan de Oro posted the highest food threshold at PhP 10,068 in a month. Meanwhile, Camiguin posted the lowest food threshold at PhP 9,459.
