Unabia Advances Disaster Response in MisOr

Misamis Oriental – In a significant stride toward bolstering disaster response capabilities within the province of Misamis Oriental, Governor Peter “Sr. Pedro” M. Unabia, in collaboration with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), oversaw the turnover of a vital technology: the Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) set during the 7th Flag Raising Ceremony at the Provincial Capitol Grounds.

This provision of VSAT technology is a landmark moment in enhancing communication infrastructure for disaster emergency responses across the province. Facilitated under the DICT – United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Connectivity, Capability, and Resiliency through Free Wi-Fi for All (CoRe FW4A) Project, it underscores the Philippine Government’s commitment to expedite the Free Wi-Fi for All National Program mandated by Republic Act No. 10929, also known as the Free Internet Access in Public Places Act of 2017.

VSAT technology offers reliable internet access, crucial when traditional communication channels like voice, data, internet, television, and radio are compromised during emergencies. Its deployment ensures uninterrupted communication, aiding swift needs assessment and timely dissemination of crucial public information vital for effective disaster management.

The mobility and cost-effectiveness of VSAT make it indispensable for maintaining critical communication channels during and after disasters. This technology serves as a valuable asset for disaster response organizations, especially the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) of Misamis Oriental, empowering them to navigate challenging circumstances and deliver efficient aid to affected communities.

Governor Unabia’s proactive embrace of technological advancements underscores his commitment to the safety and well-being of the province’s residents. With VSAT integration, Misamis Oriental is better equipped to confront and mitigate the impact of disasters, enhancing its resilience in adversity. This collaboration between the government and DICT sets a commendable precedent for disaster preparedness and response nationwide, showcasing a strategic approach to innovation for the greater good.
