TALACOGON, Agusan del Sur — The family of the late Agusan del Sur basketball icon Rene Clert Baterbonia is set to observe his Kuwarenta Dias, or 40th-day remembrance, on July 18, as supporters from across the country and abroad continue to honor the man whose life inspired generations of basketball players.

Known for their deep Catholic faith, the Baterbonia family will mark the occasion with a Holy Mass and prayers, following the Filipino Catholic tradition of remembering and praying for the faithful departed on the 40th day after death.

With a large number of relatives, friends, former teammates, athletes and supporters expected to attend, the Municipal Government of Talacogon is encouraging individuals and groups planning tribute activities to coordinate with the local government to ensure the observance remains solemn, organized and meaningful.

Municipal officials said those intending to hold basketball exhibitions, candle-lighting ceremonies, motorcades or other commemorative activities are advised to coordinate with the town to facilitate proper scheduling and crowd management.

More than a month after Baterbonia’s passing, the grief over his death continues to resonate well beyond his hometown. His loss has been mourned not only throughout Agusan del Sur and the Caraga Region but also across the Philippines and among Filipinos overseas, where countless tributes and messages of sympathy have been shared by former teammates, coaches, athletes, fans and members of the basketball community.

In Talacogon, the outpouring of love has shown no signs of fading. Visitors continue to arrive daily at Baterbornia’s grave in Barangay Labnig, lighting candles, offering prayers and paying their respects to the basketball legend whose influence extended far beyond the court.

For many Filipino Catholics, the Kuwarenta Dias marks a significant milestone in mourning. While the Catholic Church encourages prayers for the deceased at any time, the 40th-day remembrance has become a cherished Filipino tradition, bringing families and communities together in prayer and remembrance.

For Talacogon, the July 18 observance will be more than a religious tradition. It will also be a celebration of the life and enduring legacy of a hometown hero whose passion for basketball, humility and commitment to inspiring young athletes continue to live on in the hearts of those he touched.

As preparations continue, local officials are calling on supporters to help make the commemoration a fitting and dignified tribute to one of Agusan del Sur’s most beloved sporting icons.
