SAN FRANCISCO, Agusan del Sur — The future of Agusan del Sur’s agriculture depends not only on producing more crops but on understanding the foundation where food grows — the soil, according to Rep. Adolph Edward “Eddiebong” G. Plaza.
Plaza, representative of the 2nd District of Agusan del Sur, emphasized the importance of soil science, sustainable farming practices, and agricultural knowledge during the first commencement exercises of the Agusan del Sur State University (ADSSU) in Bunawan on August 14.
Serving as guest of honor and commencement speaker, Plaza told the pioneer graduates that true development begins by strengthening the foundation where communities depend — particularly agriculture, which remains a major source of livelihood in the province.
During the ceremony, Plaza was conferred the degree of Doctor of Agriculture Honoris Causa, recognizing his advocacy for agricultural development and his efforts to promote the role of science in improving farming communities.
In his message, Plaza stressed that soil is more than just earth beneath people’s feet.
“It is the source of food, livelihood, resilience, and hope for countless Agusanons,” he said, emphasizing the need for farmers and future agricultural professionals to understand soil conditions and apply appropriate farming practices.
Plaza said that improving farmers’ lives requires more than traditional approaches. He highlighted the importance of using scientific knowledge to determine the right agricultural practices, improve farm productivity, and create solutions that reach farming communities.
“Great leaders do not only develop places; they nurture the very foundation where communities grow,” Plaza said.
The lawmaker also connected his advocacy to the legacy of his late father, former governor and congressman Democrito Otaza Plaza, whose guidance to care for Indigenous Peoples and advance agriculture in Agusan del Sur became a continuing principle in his public service.
“Today, this doctorate is not about what I have accomplished. It is about a promise I have carried with me throughout my life,” Plaza told the graduates.
He recalled his father’s words:
“Take care of the Indigenous Peoples and take care of agriculture in Agusan del Sur — the province’s greatest contribution to the nation.”
Plaza said that message later became more than advice, describing it as his responsibility and commitment to public service.
The commencement ceremony also marked a major milestone for ADSSU, which was elevated from the former Agusan del Sur State College of Science and Technology (ASSCAT) into a state university through legislation authored by Plaza.
The transition gave the institution a broader mandate in higher education, research, and agricultural development, strengthening its potential role in addressing the province’s farming challenges.
Agriculture remains central to Agusan del Sur’s economy, but many farmers continue to face challenges, including low productivity, limited access to technology, and vulnerability to changing weather conditions.
Through stronger agricultural research and education, Plaza said universities like ADSSU can help bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and the realities faced by farmers.
The message he left for the pioneer graduates was rooted in service: that knowledge should not remain inside classrooms but should become solutions that improve communities.
For Agusan del Sur, the challenge now is turning scientific understanding of the soil into productive farms, stronger communities, and better opportunities for the next generation.
