Volunteers came together on June 8, 2026, for the World Oceans Day Coastal Clean-Up at the Coastal Area of Barangay Masao, demonstrating a shared commitment to protecting the environment and preserving local coastlines.

The initiative, which was spearheaded by SM Cares through SM City Butuan, was successfully conducted with the help of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Caraga Caraga, Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) Caraga, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of Agusan del Norte, and Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Nasipit.

Volunteers from Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Caraga, Butuan City Police Office, City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), Butuan Bay Development Alliance (BBDA), Rotary Club of Central Butuan, Barangays Tandang Sora and Doongan, SM Supermarket, SM Appliance Center, Father Saturnino Urios University, Girl Scouts of the Philippines Agusan del Norte Chapter, Butuan Runners Club, and Chooseday Zumba Club also joined the meaningful celebration of ocean conservation.

Working side by side along the shoreline, volunteers collected a total of 406.9 kilograms of waste, helping prevent litter from entering the ocean and harming coastal ecosystems. The activity also highlighted the importance of collective action in promoting responsible waste management and environmental stewardship.

Held in celebration of World Oceans Day, the clean-up drive reflects SM Supermalls’ continuing commitment to sustainability and community engagement. Through partnerships with government agencies, civic organizations, and local communities, initiatives such as this help create cleaner coastlines and raise awareness about the role everyone plays in protecting the environment.
