A recent health incident in Hong Kong has drawn attention to food safety after eight individuals reportedly fell ill following the consumption of raw seafood at a luxury hotel restaurant. Health authorities confirmed that the affected group, composed of five women and three men aged 28 to 29, developed symptoms including diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and fever roughly 25 to 75 hours after dining at the Clipper Lounge of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel.
According to preliminary findings, the individuals shared several food items, including raw oysters, salmon sashimi, crab legs, and brown crab. While four sought medical consultation, none required hospitalization and all are currently reported to be in stable condition. Investigators suspect norovirus infection, likely linked to contaminated raw oysters, as the probable cause.
Health experts explain that oysters can accumulate harmful pathogens because they filter large amounts of seawater. If harvested from contaminated waters, they may carry viruses or bacteria that can lead to foodborne illness. Because of this, authorities have advised restaurants and consumers alike to exercise caution when handling or consuming raw shellfish.
