Palace Urges OFWs to Reconsider “Zero Remittance Week” Protest

The Philippine government has urged Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) to carefully consider the consequences of the planned “zero remittance week” in support of former President Rodrigo Duterte. Malacañang stressed the importance of prioritizing the welfare of their families in the Philippines, who may be significantly affected by the withholding of financial aid.

In a press briefing on March 25, 2025, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro acknowledged reports that certain OFW groups, particularly in Croatia, are planning to temporarily stop sending remittances from March 28 to April 4, 2025. The initiative is reportedly a form of protest following Duterte’s arrest.

Castro warned that such an action would not only impact the Philippine government’s economy but, more importantly, the OFWs’ own families who depend on their earnings for daily expenses, education, and other essential needs. She urged those working abroad to carefully weigh the potential consequences of their protest, highlighting that their loved ones in the Philippines could face financial hardships due to the suspension of remittances.

Furthermore, the Palace official encouraged OFWs to adopt a more balanced and rational approach in expressing their sentiments regarding the situation. She emphasized that while Filipinos have the right to voice their concerns, they must also ensure that their actions do not inadvertently harm those closest to them.

Remittances from OFWs play a crucial role in the Philippine economy, contributing billions of pesos annually and serving as a lifeline for millions of Filipino families. Any disruption in these financial inflows could have significant repercussions, not only on individual households but also on the broader economic landscape.

As discussions surrounding the issue continue, the Philippine government remains hopeful that OFWs will take into account the well-being of their families and explore alternative ways to express their support without causing undue hardship to their loved ones.
