Palace press officer Claire Castro has reminded supporters of former President Rodrigo Duterte that the government should not be blamed for his arrest. Castro emphasized that Duterte himself had challenged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to indict him for his contentious war on drugs campaign.
Castro stressed that the ICC case against Duterte was a direct result of his own actions during his presidency, particularly his war on drugs. “The case against him in the ICC is not the government’s doing, but rather a consequence of his own actions,” she said in a press briefing on Wednesday.
This statement comes as Duterte’s supporters have been criticizing the government’s handling of the ICC arrest warrant. However, Castro’s clarification highlights the fact that Duterte’s arrest is a result of the ICC’s independent investigation and not a government-led initiative.
