CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY—Looking for a place to celebrate literary and artistic diversity through the printed word?

Writers, artists, and art enthusiasts are invited to a day full of zines, music, and live poetry performances at HÚLAD R·X: Northern Mindanao Zine Fest, happening at Carmen Art District (CAD) on Sunday, May 31, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

For a registration fee of only PHP 50.00 for the benefit of CAD, a heritage house and art space, attendees will gain full access to the events for the entire day.

The festival features a packed schedule designed for both curious newcomers and seasoned independent creators, ranging from a zine-making workshop with author NH Legaspi of Papel-Papel Publishing OPC, a printmaking workshop with artist Rey Bollozos of Inkanto Prints, and a zinester roundtable with writer Jessa C. Suganob of CAD.

The highlight of this fest is a launch and Q&A with Abigail C James, author of Password and Other Works (2025) and Mindanao ambassador for the ka·handa·an indie publishing project of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), with a staged reading of her one-act play, “Birhen.”

At sundown there will be live poetry readings from Nagkahiusang Magsusulat sa Cagayan de Oro (NAGMAC) and musical performances from Indie CDO, followed by an open mic.

HÚLAD R·X is spearheaded by NAGMAC, CAD, Papel-Papel, Indie CDO, and the Pureza Neri Ramos Library. It is funded by the NCCA under the year-long Bekët Panitikan: Para sa Katwiran at Kalikasan program, which was launched during the National Literature Month to bring nationwide attention and support to Philippine literature in the regions.

Inspired by the Binisaya word húlad which means “reproduction” or “facsimile,” HÚLAD R·X spotlights the zine—a self-published, often photocopied, non-commercial medium similar to a booklet that serves as a powerful tool for unfiltered self-expression and literary and cultural dissent. The fest will feature over 50 different zine titles from exhibitors from across Cagayan de Oro City and Northern Mindanao, with guest publishers from SOCCSKSARGEN and other regions.

Whether you want to learn a new craft, browse independent zines, support local literature, share your voice at the open mic, or listen to live performances, HÚLAD R·X has a space for everyone.
