SAN FRANCISCO, Agusan del Sur — A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck off the coast near the town of General Luna in Siargao Island, Surigao Norte early Friday morning, prompting local authorities to implement immediate safety measures amid concerns of aftershocks and possible damage.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded the quake at 7:03 a.m. in nearby offshore waters. While no tsunami warning has been issued, local officials are taking precautionary action to ensure the safety of residents.
Mayor Johnson Sajulga announced that an executive order will soon be issued to formalize emergency protocols in the municipality. In the meantime, the local government has suspended classes at all levels until further notice. Inter-island travel, port operations, and all sea-related activities have also been halted as a safety precaution.
The mayor’s advisory was posted on the Local Government of General Luna, Surigao del Norte social media page.
Residents living in coastal and low-lying areas are being instructed to evacuate to higher ground. Evacuation efforts are being coordinated with assistance prioritized for children, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable individuals.
Work in government offices has been suspended, except for personnel involved in emergency response, healthcare, and relief operations. Private businesses have also been advised to temporarily halt operations or adopt flexible work-from-home arrangements where possible.
Emergency response teams have been activated, including the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, Municipal Health Office, Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office, and barangay officials.
The public is strongly urged to remain calm, stay alert for official advisories, and avoid spreading unverified information. PHIVOLCS has warned that aftershocks are expected and that some structural damage may occur.
Further updates will be issued through the official communication channels of the General Luna local government.
