Kamigin Tribe stands united and resilient amid challenges that Indiginous Peoples encountered

Valencia City, Bukidnon / Malaybalay City, Bukidnon — The Kamigin Indigenous Cultural Communities/Indigenous Peoples (ICCs/IPs) of Camiguin made a strong statement of identity and unity as they participated in the “Gimba Ha Pusaka” IP Fashion Show and Cultural Presentation held at Robinsons Mall, Valencia City, and the Regional IP Summit at the Malaybalay City Amphitheater.

This participation is part of the celebration of the 28th Anniversary of the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA) of 1997, anchored on the theme:
“Weaving Culture, Enriching Future: Empowering Indigenous Communities as Bedrock of Sustainable Development.”

The event serves as a powerful declaration to the public and the whole world that the Kamigin ICCs/IPs exist, continue to thrive, and uphold their culture and heritage despite the non-recognition by the Provincial and some Local Government Units of Camiguin.

Leading the Kamigin delegation was the Politikanhong Gambalay ta Kamigin Tribe, headed by Pamongpongan Datu “Momot” Adriano A. Ebcas, together with Pangabaga Datu “Agila” Jimmy B. Malaton, Datu “Magbubukid” Dario E. Awiten (Head Claimant of CADC 172), Bae “Liwayway” Nenita Dagoc (Tribal Chieftain of Brgy. Manuyog, Sagay), Datu Leon Libago (Barangay Chieftain of Looc, Catarman), Bae “Rosas” Gloria Jaquilmac (Balite), Bae “Amihan” Ruby Kho (San Miguel, Mahinog), Bae Janeth Cabeguin, and Bae Gloria Campos.

The Kamigin ICCs showcased their traditional attire, indigenous identity, and cultural pride alongside other Indigenous Peoples from across Northern Mindanao. Their presence reaffirmed their rightful place in the Indigenous Peoples’ community and underscored their continuing struggle for recognition and respect under the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA) of 1997.

“We may be unrecognized by some, but our existence, culture, and identity are undeniable. We will continue to stand as Kamigin,” a tribal elder declared during the summit.

The Kamigin ICCs also expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) for its unwavering support and for providing spaces where their identity, culture, and heritage can be shared and celebrated.

Their participation in these regional events is a symbol of resilience, unity, and hope — a living testament that the Kamigin ICCs/IPs remain steadfast in asserting their existence and their rights as Indigenous Peoples of Camiguin.
