Homeward Bound

Muscat, Oman — Inside Oman Air’s faved dreamliner was a mix of nationalities, but one race stands out — proud OFWs as it were, extra ecstatic to fly back to dear homeland called The Philippines.

Next to the land of milk and honey, the Middle East is one region that host millions of overseas Filipinos working in a variety of roles to earn green bucks for the family back home.

For decades, Overseas Filipino Workers, fondly called OFWs are abound in practically all countries and territories worldwide,
earning their keeps, nothwithstanding the countless struggles they faced, endured and survived through the passing of time.

At this time of the year, OFWs are seen rushing all throughout in major airports the world over, catching their flights as if there are no more tomorrow to look up to.

These are the modern-day heroes that keeps the country’s economy alive, well and robust through their remittances in millions of dollars.

But why are Filipinos nomadic when it comes to earning a living?
The financial depression in the ‘70s has started it all.

There came a time when the Filipino workforce, out of despair from the government’s wicked employment and labor policies, had to make the streets of major cities their parliament that led to the fragmentation of civil societies that created the masa, the left and all other forms of economic discords like other for a country long dominated by foreign controls and interventions.

Today, in the eyes of other nationalities,
the Filipino workers are extra hailed, not only of their English fluency but of their hard working resiliency and ingenuity, becoming the global workforce of all sorts.
But of course, the tribute would come double or even triple if more accolades, respect and recognition are added to the Filipino worker’s badge of honor.
