The global labour market is undergoing a structural transformation. This is driven by digitalization, artificial intelligence (AI), and automation. What was once a relatively stable transition from university to employment has become increasingly volatile and uncertain.
Today, employability is no longer guaranteed by a university degree alone. Instead, it is shaped by adaptability, digital fluency, and the ability to work alongside intelligent machines. Nearly 40% of global jobs are now exposed to AI-driven change. It indicates a profound shift in how work is organized and executed (IMF, 2026). This phenomenon marks a departure from conventional employment patterns toward a dynamic, skills-based economy.
In this disruptive landscape, the nature of work is not simply disappearing—it is being reconfigured. Reports indicate that between 50% and 55% of jobs will be significantly reshaped by AI in the near term (BCG, 2026). Similarly, employers anticipate that 39% of core workforce skills will change by 2030 (WEF, 2025). These figures highlight a critical reality: universities are no longer the sole gatekeepers of employability, and their curricula often lag behind the pace of technological change.
Certain job categories are particularly vulnerable. Routine, repetitive, and rule-based occupations—such as data entry clerks, cashiers, telemarketers, and basic administrative roles—are rapidly declining due to automation (Abacademies, 2025)
Even white-collar professions are not immune. Tasks in translation, customer service, and paralegal work are increasingly being handled by AI systems (Workplace AI Impact, 2025). This does not necessarily mean entire professions vanish, but rather that the composition of their tasks changes significantly. Recent evidence suggests that AI tends to replace tasks, not entire jobs, thereby redefining professional roles rather than eliminating them (Reuters, 2026).
Conversely, new job categories are emerging at an unprecedented rate. Roles such as AI specialists, data scientists, cybersecurity analysts, prompt engineers, and digital transformation consultants are becoming central to modern economies. The demand for these roles is driven not only by technological capability.
Unfortunately, they are also driven by the need to manage, interpret, and ethically govern AI systems. By 2030, it is estimated that 170 million new jobs will be created globally, offsetting many of the roles that will be displaced (Future of Jobs analysis, 2025). Importantly, these new jobs require hybrid competencies—combining technical expertise with cognitive and social skills.
The core problem is that many universities are not adequately preparing students for the demands of the digital workforce. Traditional curricula often prioritize theoretical knowledge over practical skills, digital competencies, and interdisciplinary learning, leaving graduates underprepared for AI-driven and data-intensive workplaces.
This gap contributes to graduate underemployment (Education Report, 2026). At the same time, employers increasingly value human-centred skills—such as critical thinking, creativity, emotional intelligence, and leadership—which complement technical expertise and are essential for success in AI-intensive roles (Gulati et al., 2025).
To address this gap, universities must undergo systemic transformation. First, curricula need to be continuously updated to reflect industry demands, particularly in AI literacy, data skills, and digital ethics. Second, experiential learning—through internships, project-based learning, and industry collaboration—must be embedded into academic programs. Third, lifelong learning should be institutionalized, recognizing that graduates will need to reskill and upskill throughout their careers.
In reality, employability in a disruptive digital society is no longer a linear outcome of higher education. It is a dynamic process shaped by technological evolution, labour market demands, and individual adaptability. Universities that fail to respond to this transformation risk producing graduates who are academically qualified but professionally unprepared. The challenge, therefore, is not merely to educate—but to future-proof.
