China Denies Receiving Asylum Application from Former Philippine President Duterte

Beijing, China – The Chinese government has denied reports that former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and his family have sought asylum in China. In a statement on Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun said there is no evidence to support claims that an application for asylum has been received from the former leader.

The clarification comes amid growing speculation regarding Duterte’s whereabouts following his recent arrest in the Philippines. The former president, who has been a controversial figure due to his administration’s policies on crime and human rights, is facing legal challenges that have sparked debates over political persecution and international asylum options.

China’s denial signals that Beijing is not extending protection to Duterte despite his administration’s previously close ties with the Chinese government. During his tenure, Duterte shifted Philippine foreign policy toward China, fostering economic cooperation and downplaying territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

Meanwhile, Duterte’s supporters and critics remain deeply divided over the circumstances of his arrest. While some opposition groups and international watchdogs have called for accountability for alleged human rights violations under his leadership, his allies argue that his detention is politically motivated.

Critics of the arrest have condemned it as a potential overreach and a violation of Philippine sovereignty, warning of possible political instability in the country. The Philippine government has yet to release an official response to China’s statement.

As the situation unfolds, observers are closely monitoring any further developments regarding Duterte’s legal battles and potential moves by foreign governments concerning his status.
