SAN FRANCISCO, Agusan del Sur–— The Butuan City Police Office (BCPO) has intensified security measures and community engagement activities as the city observes the Martial Law Anniversary on Monday, September 21.
Police Colonel Richie M. Yatar, BCPO city director, said the heightened security posture aims to ensure public safety while respecting the people’s right to peaceful expression and assembly.
The BCPO conducted police visibility patrols, barangay dialogues, and information campaigns through radio broadcasts, social media platforms, and direct community engagement as part of its efforts to promote historical awareness and maintain peace and order.
Assistance desks and quick response teams were also deployed in key areas to immediately address public concerns during the observance.
The city’s police stations also strengthened their respective security preparations.
At Butuan City Police Station 3 (BCPS3), additional personnel were deployed to key thoroughfares, public gathering areas, and vital installations to ensure the orderly conduct of activities.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Joseph G. Gementiza, BCPS3 officer-in-charge, said the security measures were intended to protect the public and support the peaceful observance of the anniversary.
“We respect every citizen’s right to observe this significant date in our nation’s history — whether through remembrance, dialogue, or peaceful protest,” Gementiza said.
He added that police personnel were instructed to exercise maximum tolerance, uphold human rights standards, and maintain professionalism in dealing with the public.
Meanwhile, Butuan City Police Station 1 (BCPS1), under Police Major Namra P. Arimao Jr., conducted increased police visibility, security checks, and monitoring activities within its area of responsibility.
The station also coordinated with community stakeholders to help maintain a peaceful environment and reminded residents to report suspicious activities or emergencies through Unified 911 or police hotlines.
Butuan City Police Station 6 (PS6) also placed additional security measures in anticipation of possible protest activities related to the anniversary.
Police Major John Fred A. Homol, acting station commander, said personnel would remain professional and impartial while ensuring the safety of both participants and the general public.
Butuan City Police Station 5 (BCPS5), meanwhile, reminded residents to observe the anniversary peacefully and responsibly.
Police Captain Jun M. Orillan, officer-in-charge of BCPS5, urged the public to respect differing views, avoid confrontations, and follow lawful instructions during commemorative activities.
The BCPO reiterated that its security measures are focused on maintaining peace and order while protecting the constitutional rights of citizens to peaceful assembly and expression.
