The municipality of Bataraza in Palawan is set for a major urban transformation, thanks to an $8 billion investment from Malaysian firm JJC Group Development Asia Sdn Bhd. This development, aimed at elevating Bataraza into a highly urbanized and world-class city, was solidified through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed on June 18 by Bataraza Mayor Abraham Ibba and JJC Group’s President and CEO, Jismit Bin Japong.
The ambitious project will cover 2,000 hectares of land in Bataraza, featuring key infrastructure developments such as an airport, seaport, integrated transportation system, water, and power facilities. The plan also includes the construction of five-star hotels, a resort, a theme park, a convention center, a stadium, a Formula 1 racetrack, and a cable car system, all designed to boost tourism and enhance eco-tourism.
In addition to tourism infrastructure, the project will develop commercial and residential spaces, including shopping malls, a new city core, and various residential areas. A symbolic Bataraza Tower for the Local Government Unit is also planned, reflecting the town’s rapid development.
JJC Group envisions Bataraza as a sustainable, resilient, and smart city, with a focus on smart connectivity, advanced infrastructure, green spaces, environmental protection, and resilient urban planning. The company aims to promote economic growth and tourism through technological hubs and economic platforms.
The project, expected to be completed within five to seven years, was strategically located in Bataraza due to its proximity to Sabah, Malaysia. Mayor Ibba expressed full support, highlighting its importance for both Bataraza and the entire province of Palawan. While the project is still in its early stages, with many permits pending, the groundbreaking is anticipated next month. ##
