A relaxing night out in Bali suddenly turned into a terrifying ordeal after a popular restaurant in Seminyak erupted into flames, forcing hundreds of diners to scramble for their lives.

The fire broke out just before 8 p.m. on Sunday at Chez Gado Gado, a well-known restaurant that has been a favourite among tourists for nearly three decades. Among the diners were numerous Australian holidaymakers who were caught in the chaos.

Initial reports suggest the blaze may have started during a birthday celebration. Witnesses said a sparkler came into contact with a balloon believed to have been filled with hydrogen, triggering a sudden explosion.

What followed was a scene of panic.

Witnesses described hearing multiple explosions as flames quickly spread through the restaurant and reached its thatched roof. Diners screamed and rushed toward the exits, while staff attempted to control the flames using fire extinguishers.

The situation became even more chaotic when the main escape route became congested.

One witness said a ceiling light reportedly fell onto a woman, while others described people being blown backward by the force of the blast. Several diners were forced to jump to safety as strangers helped one another escape the burning restaurant.

A Perth family of four was among those who managed to flee. Witnesses later said diners eventually sought safety along the nearby beach as burning embers rained down from the restaurant.

Despite the frightening scenes, there was a remarkable outcome.

Authorities and witnesses reported that no one was seriously injured in the incident. One restaurant staff member, however, suffered burns to her hand.

By daylight, the extent of the destruction became clear.

The once-popular Chez Gado Gado had been reduced to a charred shell, with the restaurant’s contents destroyed. Four motorcycles were also reportedly damaged in the blaze.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly a celebration can turn into a life-threatening emergency, particularly when flammable materials are involved.

For the hundreds of diners who escaped that night, what began as an ordinary dinner in Bali became a terrifying story they are unlikely to forget.
