President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has formally honored a Filipino overseas worker (OFW) for a remarkable act of bravery after rescuing a baby from a deadly fire that broke out in a residential building in Hong Kong. The recognition was conferred during a ceremony at Malacañang Palace, where the President praised the OFW’s courage and selflessness in the face of extreme danger.
The fire erupted in the early hours of the morning, rapidly spreading smoke and flames throughout the building and catching residents by surprise. Amid the chaos, witnesses recalled hearing the cries of a baby trapped inside one of the units. The OFW, who was working in the building at the time, immediately responded to the distress call. Despite the thick smoke, intense heat, and falling debris, the OFW navigated through the hazardous conditions and successfully carried the infant to safety.
In his address, President Marcos said the heroic act exemplified the finest qualities of the Filipino people—compassion, resilience, and a deep sense of responsibility toward others. He emphasized that while OFWs are often recognized for their economic contributions through remittances, their impact extends far beyond financial support. “Our overseas workers serve as ambassadors of goodwill, showing the world the courage and humanity of the Filipino,” the President said.

Hong Kong fire services and local authorities also commended the OFW’s decisive actions, noting that the swift rescue played a crucial role in saving the baby’s life. Building administrators echoed the praise, stating that the OFW’s calm and presence of mind helped reassure residents during the evacuation and prevented further panic.
In accepting the honor, the OFW humbly shared that the decision to act was instinctive. They said they did not think about personal safety or recognition at the time, only the urgent need to save a life. The OFW also expressed gratitude to both the Philippine and Hong Kong governments for their support, as well as to fellow residents and emergency responders who worked together during the incident.
The Department of Foreign Affairs highlighted that the recognition forms part of ongoing efforts to acknowledge the sacrifices and contributions of OFWs worldwide. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Filipino workers abroad while celebrating stories that reflect their courage, dedication, and humanity.
