CAMIGUIN (PIA) — Marking a new chapter for the island’s growing reputation as a premier ecotourism and sports destination in Northern Mindanao, the provincial government of Camiguin officially launched its flagship tourism campaign, “Isle Visit Camiguin 2026,” during a press conference, October 23.
Gov. Xavier Jesus Romualdo said the new campaign marks another bold step forward for the province, which has shown consistent economic and tourism growth over the past years. “Our island has steadily risen as one of the country’s most admired destinations,” he said. “It reflects the resilience, creativity, and hard work of every Camiguingnon who continues to believe in the potential of our tourism and local industries.”
The governor shared that Camiguin posted an 8.6% economic growth rate in 2024, making it the fastest-growing province in Northern Mindanao and among the top ten nationwide. Visitor arrivals also increased by nearly 38%, reaching 288,558 in 2024, a mix of local and foreign tourists.
“This Isle Visit Camiguin campaign isn’t just about attracting tourists. It’s about sustaining our economic momentum, creating more livelihood opportunities for our people, and ensuring that tourism continues to be a strong driver of inclusive growth for our province in the years to come,” he added.
The governor also confirmed that the island will host several major events next year under the campaign’s four themes—Isle Trek, Isle Win, Isle Dive, and Isle Enjoy—including the first-ever Ironman 5150 Camiguin in May 2026, Climb Camiguin in March, and Isle Dive Camiguin in August. “Hosting the Ironman 5150 is a bold step forward, and it proves that even a small island like ours can rise to the occasion, meet global standards, and leave a lasting impression on the world’s reach,” Romualdo said.
Department of Tourism (DOT)-10 Regional Director Marie Elaine Unchuan lauded the province for its tourism efforts, expressing full support on behalf of DOT Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco. “We proudly and fully support the Camiguin ‘Isle Be There’ campaign and ‘Isle Visit Camiguin 2026’ program, a visionary initiative that celebrates the island’s pristine natural beauty, rich heritage, and gives an enticing invitation for our tourists to experience this beautiful island, Camiguin,” she said.
Unchuan noted that the province’s consistent efforts to promote responsible and community-driven tourism have not only enhanced its reputation but also attracted both local and foreign visitors seeking authentic travel experiences.
“Fresh from being recognized as the best ecotourism destination in the recent Philippine Tourism Awards, Camiguin continues to shine as a model for sustainable and inclusive tourism in the Philippines, and I can truly say it is one of the best destinations in the country,” she added.
Unchuan also announced upcoming initiatives under the Isle Dive Program, including the planned installation of a hyperbaric chamber next year—a major step in making Camiguin one of the safest diving destinations in the Philippines.
Among the guests was an international triathlete who praised Camiguin’s potential to host global competitions. “This can be a place for international athletes,” the runner said. “We cycle the whole island—64 kilometers—and we’re thinking we can do it three times over here and make a full Ironman. The hotels are nice, and the people are really, really beautiful and friendly. I think what we have here is an international place in the future.”
The athlete’s remarks echoed the province’s growing reputation as an emerging sports tourism hub, with Camiguin’s scenic routes, warm hospitality, and well-developed facilities positioning it as an ideal venue for world-class endurance events. “As we continue to promote responsible and sustainable tourism, we also anticipate greater revenues and tax contributions, which in turn would allow us to have larger budgets and stronger support for tourism growth. Ultimately, all these efforts will contribute to enhancing Camiguin’s brand equity, positioning our island not just as a destination to visit but as a model for inclusive and sustainable tourism,” Romualdo said.
