Cebu Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 26, and 147 Injured

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reported that the death toll from the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Bogo City, Cebu, on Tuesday evening has reached 26. According to OCD Deputy Spokesperson Diego Mariano, the situation is still being assessed, and reports are being validated to provide a clearer picture of the disaster’s impact.

The OCD also reported that 147 people were injured in the earthquake, with many more potentially trapped under rubble. Rescue operations are ongoing, with medical teams and emergency responders working tirelessly to reach those affected. The quake caused significant damage to buildings, roads, and infrastructure in Bogo City and nearby towns.

Rescue teams, including medical personnel and emergency responders, are working to locate and assist those affected by the earthquake. Governor Pamela Baricuatro has mobilized provincial medical teams and appealed for volunteers to reinforce overstretched hospitals. The local government has also set up an Emergency Operations Center in Danao City to coordinate relief efforts.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has reported 282 aftershocks since the earthquake, with 16 measuring above magnitude 3.5. The aftershocks have caused continued fear and uncertainty among residents, with many still seeking shelter outside their homes.

The Office of the President has pledged immediate aid to support relief efforts in Cebu. The provincial government has also deployed heavy equipment, including dump trucks and boom trucks, to assist in clearing operations and restoring essential services. Relief efforts are ongoing, with authorities working to provide assistance to affected communities.
