By: Maria Angelica Mikaela G. Mora

In an inspiring display of community solidarity and compassion, the 17 Rotary Clubs of Zone 1, District 3870, in partnership with local government units, the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro Spouses, and Junior Chamber International local organizations, took a significant step towards addressing a critical issue that often remains hidden in the shadows: mental health. The launch of the Mental Health Program at SM Downtown was a powerful testament to the clubs’ dedication to holistic well-being and its commitment to uplifting the lives of its fellow citizens.

New Year – New Me

The launching of the program coincided with the ROTARY NEW YEAR global celebration, where Clubs also officially launched the 2023 Rotary Year Theme of CREATING HOPE IN THE WORLD. During the launching, the club and its partners provided free legal services, medical services, government services, and mental wellness talks in partnership with Philhealth, SSS, Pag-ibig fund, the Philippine National Police, the Integrated Bar of Philippines, the Northern Mindanao Medical Center, JR Borja General Hospital, Summon of Aesclepius, Del Monte Phils, Xavier University, Nestle Phils, Pathway to Recovery, Journey Home, SM Downtown, Signal for Help of Canada, and Mental Health First Aid.

Uniting Forces for Mental Health

At a time when mental health challenges have grown alarmingly prevalent, the Chairman of the Council of Presidents of Zone 1 Tito Mora of the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro convinced the other Clubs to unite and rise to the occasion by spearheading a pioneering initiative. The program’s launch at SM Downtown not only served as a platform to create awareness but also showcased the importance of collaborative efforts among various organizations and other stakeholders for the greater good of the community.

A Holistic Approach:

The Mental Health Program launch was not only a showcase of determination but also a demonstration of compassion and understanding. By partnering with local government units, various NGOs. the RCCDO Spouses, and Junior Chamber International, the Rotary Clubs emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to mental health care. Through diverse perspectives and resources, the program aims to provide support, education, and resources to individuals and families grappling with mental health challenges. The trainers for the Mental Wellness Talks also came from various backgrounds and specialties.

Empowering Communities Through Education:

One of the cornerstones of the program is education. A series of informative sessions were conducted by mental health professionals, community leaders, and advocates during the launch event. These sessions not only shed light on various aspects of mental health but also dispelled myths and stigmas, encouraging open conversations, and promoting an atmosphere of acceptance and empathy.

Raising Awareness, One Heart at a Time:

The launch event at SM Downtown was a visual feast for attendees, adorned with banners, displays, and informative materials. Through interactive exhibits and engaging activities, visitors were invited to learn more about mental health, its significance, and the role each person can play in supporting those affected. This hands-on approach fostered a sense of unity and collective responsibility.

Community Unity in Action:

Witnessing the collaborative spirit of local organizations like the Junior Chamber International represented by JCI Cagayan de Oro, JCI Bai Lawanen, JCI Macajalar 24K, and JCI Kagayhaan Gold, the launch was a poignant reminder that positive change can truly flourish when different entities come together with a shared purpose. By promoting mental health awareness and support, the 17 Rotary Clubs and their partners have taken a significant step towards building a resilient, compassionate, and united community.

Charting a Compassionate Path Forward:

As the Mental Health Program embarks on this transformative journey, its launch at SM Downtown stands as an inspiring testament to the power of unity and empathy. By bridging hearts and minds, the 17 Rotary Clubs of Zone 1 under the inspiring leadership of Governor Gigi Go, and their esteemed partners have illuminated a path towards a brighter future—one where mental health is prioritized, stigma is dismantled, and support is readily available for all. This groundbreaking program serves as a beacon of hope and resilience, reminding us that we are indeed stronger together. In the words of Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro’s President, Tito Noel A. Mora, “Our commitment to mental health reflects our commitment to the holistic well-being of our community. By joining hands, we can create a world where mental health is treated with the same compassion and urgency as physical health, paving the way for a stronger, more resilient society.”
