THE Professional Criminologists Association of the Philippines (PCAP), the Council of Deans Criminology Education 10 headed by president Gerry Cano and the Federation of Authors in Criminology and Criminal Justice have banded together to bat for the institutionalization of books and academic researches of Filipino criminologists and students alike into citing and indexing them.

In his welcome message during a gathering of the three groups May 15 at De Luxe Hotel in Cagayan de Oro City, Cano called for the “decolonization of criminology education” in the country.

Cano said many books adopted by criminology colleges all over the Philippines are still patterned after foreign justice systems which are not applicable here.

“We have our own sets of laws here. It’s not like nursing or engineering where concepts are universal. Our laws are unique to our country. So we need to decolonize our curriculum and set the standards,” Cano said.

His remarks was met with approval by members of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) technical panel for criminal justice education led by Atty. Ramil Gabao.

With this, both PCAP and the Council of Deans Criminology Education 10 are tapping the expertise of the Federation of Authors in Criminology and Criminal Justice on the matter.

It was learned that the federation has already published a total of 800 titles since its inception in 2007.

The meeting of the the three groups of criminology academics will continue today under the theme Knowledge Generation, Production and Publication in Criminal Justice and Safety.
