ZAMBOANGA CITY – Proud of their “Kababayans,” the City Government of Zamboanga threw a heroes’ welcome for 2020 Tokyo Olympics weightlifting gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz and Eumir Felix Marcial, bronze medalist in boxing for middleweight division.
The two Olympians arrived at the Edwin Andrews Air Base onboard a Philippine Air Force plane.
Diaz and Marcial are both residents of Zamboanga City and members of the Philippine Air Force. Diaz is a resident of barangay Mampang, while Marcial lives in barangay Lunzuran.
Upon their arrival, a motorcade around the city also followed, where the two Olympic medalists unveiled their historic markers.
After the historic unveiling, they proceeded at the City Hall and made a courtesy call at the Mayor’s Office, and attended a short program.
During the program, the City Government also handed down P2.5 million incentives for Hidilyn Diaz and another P1-million for Eumir Marcial, as their rewards for giving honor to the city and the country in general.
The teary-eyed Diaz thanked the City Government for the incentive and said that it was curiosity that propelled her to join weightlifting and that curiosity made her a champion in the eyes of the world.
“I won this gold medal, with the help of God, and with your support. I did not give up, and I feel God helped me win to inspire you,” the teary-eyed gold medalist said.
Marcial, on the other hand, said it was discipline, determination, and prayers that helped him achieve success in the recently concluded 2020 Tokyo Olympics in Japan. – PNA
