Vice Mayoralty candidate ambushed in Maguindanao

DATU SALIBO, Maguindanao – With barely 2 days before the official filing of candidacy, election-related violence has also started to surface nowadays.  

This time, a vice-mayoralty candidate to one of the towns in Maguindanao town was ambushed Wednesday by still unidentified attackers while the victim was traversing a national highway here.

Maguindanao PNP Provincial Director Col Jibin Bongcayao identified the victim as Sam Zailon Esmael, a native of the town. The victim was seated in the passenger seat of a silver Toyota pickup vehicle when the shooting took place.

The vice-mayoralty candidate, the report said, escaped unharmed but one of his heavily-armed escorts died.

The escort’s identity is not yet available at press time. But he was also seated at the cargo section of the pickup truck  

“We have yet to verify the identity of the fatality from the Esmael family,” Bongcayao said, adding the police are still facing a blank wall’ as to the identities of victims.

Initial investigations disclosed that the victims were maneuvering their vehicle along the Crossing Salbu-Dapiawan highway when suddenly motorcycle-riding suspects alighted from the crime scene, and without provocation, peppered them with bullets.

It was learned that Esmael was eyeing the vice mayoralty post of Datu Salibo, Maguindanao province.

In 2019, Esmael ran for mayor of Datu Salibo town but lost. He filed an electoral protest but it remained unsolved at press time. (PNA)
