CAGAYAN de Oro City–A town councilor in Misamis Occidental was shot dead shortly after casting his vote past 8:00 Monday morning, a report reaching here said.

The hooded unidentified gunmen reportedly gunned down Reid Isidro Moreno, town councilor of Clarin, Misamis Occidental, while walking on his way home after casting his vote in the town Poblacion.

P/Lt. Col. Benildo Tumanda, the provincial police chief, of Misamis Occidental, said that the victim was reportedly receiving “death threats” prior to the shooting incident.

He said that the motive is primarily “personal grudge,” but investigators are not ruling out politics as the possible motive for the shooting.

Witnesses told police investigators that the suspects waylaid the victim on his way home in a secluded place, Tumanda said.

He said that the peace and order situation in Misamis Occidental remained under control after the law enforcers resolved the election related incidents in Sapang Dalaga.

Sapang Dalaga is another remote town in Misamis Occidental where the presence of unidentified armed men was reportedly harassed the residents and the candidates there, Tumanda said.

According to Tumanda, the police operatives have also apprehended cases of alleged “vote buying” where the law enforcers seized ballots and “blood money.”

He said that violations of the Omnibus Election Code on illegal vote buying would be filed against the suspects.

In Misamis Oriental, about 1,400 police officers were deployed to secure the voting places in the towns 442 barangays, P/Lt. Col. Rolando Destura, the provincial police chief, said.

He said there were no report of election related incidents since the voting precincts opened 6:00 a.m. Monday.
