Town locals flee amid security threat in Marogong, Lanao Sur

By Claire R. Gigje

MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur (PIA)–Residents of the municipality of Marogong, this province, evacuated their homes after receiving an ultimatum from an alleged Dawlah Islamiyah (DI) group.

Accordingly, the security of the said town is currently threatened following an audio recording that circulated on May 26 from an alleged spokesperson of the group.

The recording announced that civilians in the locality are given three days to evacuate before the said group pursues an operation to retrieve four of their members who were recently apprehended by the government authorities.

Earlier, the 1st Infantry Division of the Philippine Army reported that operating troops from the 32nd Infantry Battalion and the 103rd Infantry Brigade conducted a combat patrol which resulted in a conflict with unidentified members of DI in the hinterlands of Brgy. Piangologan and Brgy. Pabrica in Marogong on May 26. This prompted government forces to launch a quick raid and apprehended four individuals who were allegedly DI members.

As per the latest initial report received from the involved municipal disaster risk reduction and management offices (MDRRMOs), a total of 259 households have indeed fled their places wherein 206 families or 1,236 individuals evacuated to the municipality of Binidayan, 45 families to the municipality of Balabagan while eight families are staying in the municipality of Madalum.

With this visible security threat, Marogong town is now placed on alert status.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Office is closely coordinating with the local DRRMOs to gather data and updates on the situation in the area concerned.

An emergency municipal peace and order council (MPOC) meeting was convened Sunday to tackle the local security situation. (CRG/PIA-10/Lanao del Sur)
