Solon highlights strategies in boosting tourism in Lanao del Norte before pandemic

Dimaporo served as a governor from 2007 to 2016. When MILF attacked in 2008, the provincial government had difficulties inviting people to visit the province. Despite this, the province became proactive in encouraging people to come.

“We became proactive, we made the people come. We do this through events. We started first with showcasing that Lanao del Norte is safe, he said.

Dimaporo highlighted the holding of Original Pinoy Music concerts, hosting games of the Philippine Basketball Association, and launching motorsports and LaNorte Man Triathlon Series, as strategies of correcting the misconceptions that the province is not safe.

“We had a bad history, we were attacked by MILF. We wanted to make a track record that Lanao del Norte is safe,” he remarked.

He said that with the affordable price of concert tickets, neighboring cities from Ozamis and Iligan were encouraged to visit the province which had “slowly built the reputation again that Lanao del Norte is safe from the MILF attack.”

Dimaporo also said that through sports tourism, the province aims to correct the misconception that it is a war-torn province.

He further said they first focused on regional tourism before persuading tourists from Luzon and Visayas to visit the province.

“If we cannot convince ang atong mga igsoon [our fellowmen] sa Cagayan de Oro or Bukidnon or even Misamis Occidental to come to Lanao del Norte then we have no chance of inviting other people from Cebu or Manila. We have to win the hearts first of our fellow Mindanaoans,” he added.

Apart from the bountiful agriculture and aquaculture in the province, Dimaporo said that the real niche of Lanao del Norte being the “Land of Beauty and Bounty” is its cultural diversity.

“What I find Lanao del Norte so beautiful is our cultural diversity. In our part, we want to showcase the unity of Muslims and Christians. Together our province and region will be so much more beautiful,” he said.

Meanwhile, Communications Sec. Martin Andanar also showed his support to help promote the tourism of the province through the communication platforms of the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO)

“Congressman, you have the PCOO, in the palm of your hands. My office is your office as your Cabinet Officer for Regional Development and Security. We have communication platforms that you can use,” he said.

Dimaporo also called for the cooperation of the residents in supporting the government to help curb the spread of coronavirus disease. (LELA/ PIA ICIC)
