Sen. Joel Villanueva’s reaction on the proposal to declare a state of emergency for the agriculture sector

We are ready to contact the Marcos administration regarding the declaration of a state of emergency for our agricultural sector, but we first need a thorough study of the PCAFI proposals. First things first: is it really necessary to declare a state of emergency? Is the recommendation to solve the agricultural problem really a state of emergency?

If we allocate part of the budget of LGUs to food production, how many jobs will it create or help? Which projects or programs will be sacrificed due to budget reallocation? How long will we declare a state of emergency, and what targets must we reach to say the crisis is over? How can we sustain the consequences of our actions after a state of emergency? These are just some of the questions that the proposal must answer.

At the upcoming opening of the 19th Congress, we invite the Department of Agriculture to provide a report or assessment on the state of agriculture in the country, and present plans along with suggestions from groups such as PCAFI. We can just ask the DA to brief us on the present situation including the recommendation from PCAFI. We’re here to help in any way we can.
