CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY: A ranking officer of the outlawed New People’s Army (NPA) was killed in a firefight with state forces in the hinterlands of Surigao del Norte.
A report monitored from here on Friday identifed the slain NPA rebel as “Alyas Asyong,” Political Officer and Vice Platoon Commander of the NPA’s armed propaganda unit of the 16C1, Guerilla Front 16, Northeastern Mindanao Revolutionary Committee (NEMRC).
Lt. Benjamin Elisand De Dios, Chief of the atmy’s 30IB Civil Military Operations, said that the military also seized three high powered firearms, ammunition, food supplies and medicines in the encounter site.
He said the skirmishes took place Thursday in the hinterlands of Claver, Surigao del Norte during a security patrol of the elements of the army’s 30IB in response to reports of the presence of armed group in the area.
De Dios said that the military made contact with about 10 fully armed NPA rebels led by “Alyas Asyong,” part of the group led by a certain
Roel T Neniel, a.k.a. “Jacob,” the commander of GF16, NEMRC, which resulted in the 15-minute running gun battle.
“Alyas Asyong” was positively identified by NPA rebels who surrendered to the military in order to live peacefully and availed of the various government programs for rebel returnees, De Dios said.
Recovered from the encounter site were the slain body of “Asyong,” two AK47 rifles, one M14 rifle, one bandolier, two magazines for AK47, and seven loaded magazines for the M14 rifle.
LtCol Ryan Charles G Callanta, commander of the army’s 30IB, said that the assistance of the civilians contributed in the success of the anti insurgency operations in the area. -30-
