PTIC-HK TOGETHER WITH PCGHK AND BOI ORGANIZED A WEBINAR TO PROMOTE PH AS THE NEXT HYPERSCALER HUB IN APAC 

Hong Kong, 25 August 2022 – The Philippine Trade and Investment Center in Hong Kong (PTIC-HK) in partnership with the Philippine Consulate General Hong Kong (PCGHK) and the Philippine Board of Investments (BOI) organized a webinar entitled: “The Philippines as the Next Hyperscaler Hub in APAC – Opportunities for Investments and Partnerships” on 24 August 2022 at 3:00PM (Hong Kong time) to promote the Philippines as the next centre of the hyperscaler industry in the Asia-Pacific region.

The webinar highlighted the attractions and major considerations for the hyperscalers and data centres to expand their business in the Philippines. The following are the vital details to consider: the Philippine population’s cultural affinity has the propensity to access foreign content; the mobile phone connections and internet users in the Philippines (2nd in Southeast Asia) show a propensity of the local market to consume data, access services and content to be delivered by hyperscalers; the thriving digital and economic profile of the Philippines; the robust and sustainable infrastructure in the Philippines; the rich talent pool; the strong government support; the favourable regulatory environment; and, the very promising business market, the main consumers of cloud services are local enterprises. All the above stated considerations made the webinar very timely for foreign businesses interested to enter the Philippine hyperscaler and data centre sector.

The webinar featured officials of Philippine government and leaders of top hyperscaler firms in Hong Kong and the Philippines. This webinar attracted 127 registrants who are officials of foreign companies interested to expand their business in the Philippines. The webinar was moderated and hosted by Atty. Roberto B. Mabalot, Jr., Vice Consul (Commercial) and Commercial Attaché of the PTIC-HK.

The Consul General of the Philippines to Hong Kong, Raly L. Tejada, officially opened the webinar by highlighting the advantages of doing business in the Philippines. In addition, he cited the famous world-class hyperscaler firms that are already in the Philippines as examples to further prove the potential position of the Philippines as the next hyperscaler centre.

“In recent years, the Philippines attracted some well-known global hyperscaler and data centre giants to enter the country, such as Alibaba Cloud, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, HGC Global Communications, and so on. This is excellent evidence to prove that the Philippines has superior environment for hyperscaler activities and data centre operations in the APAC region,” said Consul General Tejada.

Consul General Raly L.Tejada, delivered opening remarks to participants. 

Secretary Alfredo E. Pascual of the Department of Trade and Industry, delivered his keynote speech on how the Philippines has positioned itself towards a stronger post-pandemic recovery, leading to a more vibrant trade, investment, and industry sector, and the game-changing policies that are already in place that would allow and support the entry of high-technology companies, including hyperscalers and data centers.

Other key officials from the Philippine government spoke during the webinar. Undersecretary for Competitiveness and Innovation Group of the DTI, Dr. Rafaelita M. Aldaba presented the Philippines’ value proposition for hyperscalers and the government initiatives that are building the country’s competitive edge as a preferred location for hyperscaler firms. Thereafter, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Ivan John E. Uy discussed the state and direction of the Philippine Information and Communications Technology and Telecommunications Infrastructure. Furthermore, the Director of Renewable Energy Management Bureau of the Department of Energy (DOE), Mylene C. Capongcol discussed the opportunities and availabilities of renewable energy in the Philippines.

Key partners from the private sector also elaborated their involvement in improving the country’s investment climate. The Vice President and Technology Management Advisor from the PLDT Enterprise, Mr. Victor Aliwalas, provided updates on the growing data centre capabilities of the Philippines. Senior Vice President for In-Country Project Investment, International Business Division of HGC Global Communications Limited, Mr. Paul Lai and the Country Manager of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, Philippines, Mr. Allen Guo also shared their companies’ experiences of doing business in the Philippines to further promote the country as an ideal investment destination.

A ten-minute question and answer portion followed. The closing message was given by Executive Director Evariste M. Cagatan of the Board of Investments’ Investment Promotions Services.
